Which Grounded Theory Are You Using? An Overview of Prominent Versions

Versions of Grounded Theory

Language: English

Description

Many researchers say they are using "grounded theory," but are they talking about the same methodology?

Since the publication of The Discovery of Grounded Theory by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss, grounded theory has evolved into several distinct methodological traditions. Today, researchers encounter multiple approaches that share the name grounded theory but differ significantly in their assumptions, procedures, and goals.

Whether you are designing a study, reading the literature, supervising student research, or reviewing manuscripts, understanding these differences is essential.

In this webinar, we will trace the evolution of grounded theory and compare the three most influential approaches used today. Participants will gain practical guidance for distinguishing among the approaches.

By the end of the session, you will be able to confidently answer the question: "Which grounded theory am I using, and why does it matter?"

What you'll gain:

  • A clear roadmap of the grounded theory landscape.
  • An understanding of how the major approaches emerged.
  • Practical comparisons of coding, analysis, theory development, and researcher roles.

This webinar is on August 7, 2026, at 9 am PT. A recording of the webinar will be available until September 7, 2026.

This session will be presented by Dr. Kara Vander Linden, an experienced grounded theory researcher and the founder of the Institute for Research and Theory Methodologies and the Glaser Center for Grounded Theory. She has taught and overseen grounded theory dissertations for over 20 years.
