What Would a Conference Without Barriers Look Like?

October 21, 2026

For the past several weeks, something remarkable has been happening. Researchers from around the world have been sharing their qualitative research with one another and with anyone who wants to listen. No airport. No conference hotel. No passport. No need to be in the same time zone. Just researchers sharing their work and people around the world pressing play.

This is 2026 ic-QRTM.

What happens when barriers come down?

Academic conferences can be wonderful places. They bring researchers together. They create opportunities for conversations that might never happen otherwise.

But getting to the conference can be a barrier. Travel is expensive. Time away from work or family isn’t always possible. Visas can be difficult. Institutional funding isn’t available to everyone. And researchers don’t all have equal access to academic networks.

When those barriers determine who can participate, whose voices are we missing?

That’s the question behind this year’s tagline:

30 Days of Insight.

One Global Community.

Zero Barriers.

“Zero barriers” isn’t a claim that every obstacle to participating in research has disappeared. It’s a commitment to asking:

What can we remove?

We are seeing the possibilities now

For the third year, ic-QRTM is using its month-long YouTube format to make qualitative research available to a global audience. And now that the conference is underway, we can see what that makes possible.

A researcher can share work from wherever they are. A student can watch a presentation without traveling to a conference. A researcher can discover work from another part of the world. A presentation can reach someone who would never have encountered it through their usual academic network.

The geographic distance between researchers doesn’t disappear. But it doesn’t have to prevent connection.

When people cannot participate, the research community loses more than an audience.

It loses a voice.

One global community doesn't mean one global voice

Our 2026 theme is:

Voices in Community: Weaving Qualitative Inquiry Across Lands & Traditions

Look through the presentations being shared during ic-QRTM and you’ll see why this matters.

Qualitative inquiry does not come from one place. It does not belong to one discipline. It does not speak with one voice.

Researchers bring their own contexts, experiences, questions, traditions, and ways of understanding the worlds they study.

Bringing those voices together doesn’t mean making them the same.

It means creating opportunities to hear them.

And perhaps to discover something in another researcher’s work that we could not have discovered on our own.

Your invitation to participate

The conference is happening now. So take a few minutes today to explore.

Choose a presentation.

Listen to a researcher whose work is unfamiliar to you.

Explore a different country, discipline, or research tradition.

Share a presentation with a colleague or student.

Leave a comment. Start a conversation.

You don’t have to watch everything.

You don’t have to follow a schedule.

Just start listening.

Because a global research community is created one connection at a time.

30 Days of Insight.

One Global Community.

Zero Barriers.

The voices are here.
